Capricia Alston Interview

Where is the most memorable trip you’ve been thus far?

I’d say my most memorable trip thus far would have to be the seven-day solo vacation I took to Paris and London this past February. I think what made it so memorable was that France (plus six other European countries) was my first-ever solo getaway almost seven years ago.

On that trip, there were lots of hostels and buses involved. Now that I’m more established, I got to enjoy Paris at my own pace and treat myself to more luxurious experiences. This trip represented growth for me, and I truly had the time of my life.

What are some of your favorite food cities and countries?

I love food, but I definitely don’t consider myself a Foodie. I believe every city has at least one drool-worthy dish to offer, but I also love a good vibe, so I often look for that combo when researching restaurants.

New York, Tel Aviv, Barcelona, Tokyo, San Francisco, and New Orleans have been some of my favorite food cities—but Paris wins in the pastries department.

How do you find the best travel deals?

I use a lot of different websites to find travel deals. My favorites are: Scott’s Cheap FlightsTravelZooThe Flight Deal, and Secret Flying. I’m a big fan of letting the travel deal decide my next destination, and my general rule is if the flight is $300 or less, I’m booking it and figuring out the accommodations later.

What do you do in your downtime for self-care?

Downtime? What’s that? No, but relaxing is my ultimate self-care on a serious note. I work way more than I’d like to admit, so I enjoy spending time with friends and family, brunching in D.C., putting my Peloton to good use (it was collecting dust for a while), and of course, I’m always down for a quality pedicure, manicure or massage.

What has travel taught you?

Travel has taught me that you’re never too young or old to learn something new about yourself and the world around you.

I encourage everyone to take a solo trip at least once in their life. It’ll change you forever. Because of travel, I’m more confident, aware, humble, grateful, empathetic, friendly, outgoing, knowledgeable, and cultured.

Travel has also taught me that it doesn’t have to be expensive. I’ve splurged on the Maldives and Bora Bora, but I’ve also been to Dubai, Israel, and Iceland on round-trip flights that cost me less than $300. If you want to see the world, you absolutely can. Travel is for everyone.

What is your favorite airport?

I like London Heathrow and Doha International airport, but that’s just because I love to shop and both airports have great options. I only want to spend time waiting in the airport two ways: in a lounge or making pretty purchases.

What is your favorite beach?

Don’t judge me, but I am not a beach person whatsoever. For this reason, my favorite beach is probably Reynisfjar, Iceland’s black sand beach. It’s stunning and unique. Plus, it’s not a place you’d want to lounge all day, which is right up my alley.

What is your favorite city for food?

My all-time favorite food city is Tel Aviv. Almost every dish I tried delivered a blast of fresh flavors. Plus, I’ve never had better cucumbers, tomatoes, hummus, falafels, or fresh-squeezed juices. The food is so flavorful and filling.

Why do you travel?

I travel for many different reasons. Sometimes it’s just to escape from the everyday. Other times it’s to discover someplace new. I’m an adventure seeker and super curious by nature, so every type of trip — whether it’s domestic or international — is fulfilling for me. Travel is my recharge and my reset button, and I really couldn’t envision what my life would be like without it.

Dream destination (why)?

I recently did an ancestry test and discovered that I’m 77% West African, so my dream destination has now shifted from Seychelles to Nigeria and Ghana. I’m looking forward to planning a trip to both countries sometime soon.
