Making Moves Monday: Janine Cruz
January 2011Janine Cruz is very similar to a sports player who gets injured and always find a way to return. She has been through many ups and downs in her life but has never let a fall stop her from getting back up.
Janine has been homeless and had her first child before she even graduated high school. When you have a will to win and believe in the Lord, you won’t stop until you’ve done just that.
Only God Can Stop Me: Janine Cruz
Derrick Smith: Janine how was the holidays for you and the family?
Janine Cruz: This holiday was a special one. This was the first time in 5 years that we had our own home to celebrate. The tree and holiday decorations and seeing the smiles on my children faces confirmed they understood the true meaning of Christmas.
DS: I admire you as a woman. In my eyes you’re great! How have you maintained your ‘never quit attitude’?
JC: There are millions of individuals out here that experienced some form of hardship, let down and obstacles they didn’t know how to handle. I grew up quick especially having a baby young. I wanted my children to have a role model. The word cannot was never an option for me.
DS: What are your goals for this year?
JC: To maintain my GPA of 3.5, open the teen center for those that need a place to call home. I work as a youth volunteer in my church and I also began writing for the Literary Ministry – where I hope to reach a souls with just one word. I’m also working on my website for short stories, poetry, cards for married couples and individuals who need some excitement outside of the norm. My oldest child will be 12 this year, he’s talking of playing sports. I will continue to remain involved in my children lives.
DS: You were homeless with your two younger children and still graduated with a 3.5 GPA in Paralegal. How you were able to handle all of that?
JC: I vowed that I wouldn’t end my life the way that it was handed down to me. I chose to work hard and never settle.
DS: What would you tell young women who may be missing that voice to tell them something positive?
JC: Don’t ever let your life define who you are. Be yourself, be held accountable for your own actions and know your worth. Love and respect yourself. Most importantly, take chances, live life, have fun, and stand on your own two feet.
