Best Foods to Improve Your Eyesight

Best Food Sources for Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in the body and may also the reduce your chances of developing retinal disease and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or slow the rate of AMD, according to research studies by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Since AMD is the leading cause of loss of vision in seniors, it’s probably wise to add foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids to your meal plans as a preventative measure. The top ten foods sources for omega-3 (in order of concentration of these nutrients) are:

  • Flax seeds (ground)
  • Walnuts
  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Grass-fed beef
  • Soybeans
  • Halibut
  • Scallops
  • Shrimp
  • Tofu

Exercise Prudence

Before you add any of these foods to your daily diet in an effort to improve your eyesight, it’s probably a good idea to consult your health care or eye care professional for advice. It’s important to get enough of these valuable nutrients without running the risk of consuming too much of any of them. If you already have cataracts, AMD or any other eye disease, it’s imperative that you seek the advice of your doctor before you add or change any of your nutritional regimens.
